Empire of the Sun

From the film, Empire of the Sun, we get to know much about how the British occupied China in the face of Japanese invasion. It is clear that Jim, a young boy, gets to know about different cultures when he tries to survive during the Second World War. Cultural intelligence is the main component in the film which means that one is capable of relating and working effectively across different cultures. It enables one to be comfortable in any environment. Cultural knowledge entails what someone knows about prevailing norms, practices and beliefs based on a particular culture.

Jim clearly exhibits his cultural intelligence after being separated from his parents in Shanghai.He showed a lot of respect for the Japanese and their culture despite of being a European. He was captured by Japanese soldiers but later meets Americans where he tried to be comfortable in their culture.

Furthermore, Jim gained cultural education because he wanted to survive. However, Jim was entirely comfortable with the whole situation because he was assured that his parents were going to return. As a young boy he is able to go out and look for food. The Japanese occupying Jim’s home shows imperialism and racism. Jim meets a Japanese teenager training to become a pilot. He loved airplanes but their communication was influenced because he did not know Japanese.

The western colonialists greatly influenced the Japanese and the Chinese in terms of literature, arts, music, religion, and customs among others. Western systems were superior to the Japanese systems which made both sides support their own political agendas. Influence from the Western colonialists motivated them to expand their empire whereby many soldiers were mobilized into the Japanese army. They wanted to gain economic security as a result of widespread poverty. The wars in the 1930s occurred because Japan wanted raw materials to carry out trade and they wanted to stop colonialism.
